.223 subsonic handloads12/15/2023 ![]() ![]() Originally Posted By: KYshooter338Originally Posted By: IrelanderOriginally Posted By: Outsydlooknin75Federal Bulk. Its got a shorter barrel then your CZ rifle. I shoot standard ammo out of my Walter P22 with suppressor and its still pretty quiet. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd like to know why I'm wrong. I just fugured it would be the same type of deal with the. But use subsonic and it's as quiet as a mouse. 22 rifle it is just as loud as without the suppressor. Well, I know that when I shoot high velocity ammo in my suppressed CZ. So, yes, obviously subsonic ammo is quieter than supersonic, but how this relates to your 223 cannot be directly compared to your 22LR. In a small little CQB pit shooting at targets 10yds away the sonic crack can still ring your ears a little bit just because it's reflecting off the target so close to you. If you are using it on a 50yd+ range then you'll be just fine without earpro. Your suppressor will knock that down to hearing safe levels even if you do still hear the sonic crack. However with a 223 (particularly in shorter barreled AR's) there is a LOT of muzzle blast and that is what deafens you. Try subsonic 22LR in an unsuppressed 22LR and it's fairly quiet. Even with a suppressor most of what you hear is the sonic crack. With a 22LR in a rifle length barrel there is very little heard muzzle blast in the first place. Just shoot the damn thing and you will be fine. Why is it that when people get cans they immediately think that they need subsonic ammo? You wont find a subsonic round that is going to cycle the action of an AR unless you go to a 300 whisper or something of that nature. NOW if 22lr is not available and you want something fairly quiet ( sounds like a cap gun) out of a 16" bbl, for vermin, by all means load away.I hear you on the full power ammo with a can. Other than that, it's time better spent doing standard 223 loads, and using hand gun powder in hand guns. There are some practical uses, if you don't have a suppressor. ![]() Nice for shooting get togethers where you're limited distance wise. It makes great Kentucky Windage practice ammo. 18" MVP shooting 100 yds POI averages 6-8" low with 2-3" right of target. I load 2.8gr TG (not near load data) 55gr fmj 2.20 OAL using a tight crimp. While not useless, i'd say less practical than a 22lr. And both would most likely have the same level of effectiveness. It can easily be cloned by reloaders, however.īasically, these 2 center fire sub-sonic cartridges would have the same applications. Look at the PS90, FN won't sell the sub-sonic round to mere civilians, (even though it would be legal to do so). I understand that its applications would be seriously limited, but it is certainly not useless. ![]() 22LR is not useless, so why would a sub-sonic 5.56 round be useless? Like, your just as well off using subsonic 22 LR? Ideas?ĭoesn't the lack of energy of a subsonic 5.56 round make it just about useless? That - and I need to get it out - and not deal with liability. Some folks are doing some pretty hair brain things. Any ideas? Anyone have a point of contact at an AR or handloading magazine? From what I have read on other forums - the sooner I get this out into the wild - the better. I would like to get more out of it than knowing 10,000 people copied my load post and are taking credit for my work. MY ISSUE - I spent 7 years working on this. I don't like the idea that someone is experimenting with duplex loads and will probably hurt themselves when I am sitting on a safe load. and one of the reasons I am posting this. My load is not duplex - which is just silly stupid to be doing. I am not using Trail Boss, Clays or Tightgroup - these are published non-cycling loads. My loads work in 16" carbines and 10.3" SBR's with a suppressor. You do have to pay attention to having the correct buffer and spring in your rifle. I've been at this since 2007 working with cast and jacketed projectiles from 53gr to 100gr. I have come up with a 223/5.56mm ammo that is subsonic, fits in a standard magazine, and cycles without modification to the rifle. well, not all on my own - I did have an ammo company give me some hints way back when. ![]()
